Imagine your brain telling you, with absolute cert

Imagine your brain telling you, with absolute certainty, that you are late picking up your kids from school. Or that you need to clock in for a shift at a job you retired from thirty years ago.

That sudden, overwhelming panic is what drives one of the most stressful aspects of dementia: wandering.

When someone with cognitive decline tries to “go home,” they aren’t just confused—they are on a mission. And if you try to stop them, logically correct them, or just lock the door, that panic almost always turns into extreme agitation.

That’s exactly why the phantom bus stops in Germany are an absolute masterclass in compassionate design.

Instead of fighting a patient’s reality, care workers built a bridge to it. By placing incredibly realistic, exact-replica bus stops right outside the facility doors, they created a safe space for that wandering instinct to land.

The patient walks out, sits down to wait for their ride, and feels a sense of relief because they are finally “on their way.”
A few minutes later, a care worker can walk outside, sit beside them, gently announce that the bus is running late today, and invite them back inside for a cup of coffee.

No fighting. No forced reality checks. No locked doors stripping away their autonomy. Just pure empathy.

It is such a profound reminder that sometimes, the best way to care for someone is simply to sit beside them at the bus stop and meet them exactly where they are. 🤍

We need so much more of this kind of out-of-the-box thinking in elder care.

Intertwined with fading memories and haunting visions, he yearns for one last trail ride to make peace with death on his own terms. With his granddaughter’s help, he fights to rewrite his ending.

Inspired by my grandfather’s journey, the film gives a voice to the loss of autonomy. Drawn from my twelve years as a hospice volunteer, it offers a raw look at the patient and caregiver experience. With over 57 million people living with dementia globally, we desperately need art that brings these realities out of the shadows and sparks honest conversations about early end-of-life planning.

You can blame your eyes for this one. 👀

If you’ve ever seen a body after death, the fingernails can genuinely look longer. That’s why this myth has survived for generations.

But the truth is, your nails don’t keep growing after you die.
The cells responsible for making new nail tissue need oxygen and nutrients from your bloodstream. Once your heart stops, that process stops, too.

So what’s really happening?

It comes down to basic biology. As the body loses moisture, the skin begins to retract. As the skin around the fingers pulls back, more of the hidden nail base becomes visible—creating the illusion of new growth.

It’s one of those myths that is completely understandable. People weren’t making it up—they were describing exactly what they thought they were seeing.
